My counterpoint is that the prequels are good, actually, and a lot of people dislike them because the movies werent trying to be what the fans wanted them to be
A testament to George Lucas hiring smarter people than himself to turn his ideas into reality, and then listening to them.
The prequels suffer because he didn't do that last bit. He'd fallen in love with the legend of George Lucas by that point, not the filmmaker.
