please never forget that fictional characters are not real. pls do not forget that the entire reason they exist, their sole purpose, is to have feelings and desires projected onto them by living people. please do not scold others for the misguided empathy ur giving to a figment instead of a person

100%. A couple people I vented my frustrations to were being incredibly dismissive and treating me like I was "overreacting", and it's like "dude, you don't understand just how much this character means to people like me. To see him so horribly portrayed in his movie DEBUT really, REALLY hurts.. ; ;

Yeah, his portrayal in the movie definitely is NOT an example of him "growing and maturing". It's his INTRODUCTION to the movie canon, and the establishment of his character not just for that film canon, but (as you said) for millions upon millions of people who have never seen him before. It sucks.

Imagine your favourite character of all time being largely the same for 20+ years, suddenly showing up in a huge movie that will have millions and millions of eyes on it, and them saying something they'd never say, with a voice that doesn't fit, and a core component of their design totally altered.
