W. bancrofti is transmitted by a wide variety of mosquito genera and species, the most important being Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus, C. pipiens pipiens, Anopheles gambiae, and A. polynesiensis.

Most nematode species are parasitic, infecting various plants & animals. The remainder of the species is free-living, occupying essential niches in soil, freshwater, saltwater & other specialized habitats.
