I think a lot of the damage is already done. They have enough critical mass in content to answer a large percentage of questions that are not news related. If they’re the gateway, they hold a lot of the bargaining power.

Not to get me wrong, I love the initiative here from Cloudflare. And they do have amazing scale to have a shot at saving the web. But I fear that it won't be enough for the growing powers of dominant AI players.

And although it eats away from Google marketshare, we trade that for 2-3 powerful information gatekeepers who will take an increasingly larger share of attention. Exercising control over what we learn, and acting as a filter or interpreter of information – with little transparency or oversight.

I'm not sure if I share the optimism here. We're replacing Google with large language models that aggregate and rehash sources, with relatively little attribution or incentive to read the original.

Llama is throwing some good punches. Quite smart. Trying very hard to be just as cool.
