The motions were too practiced when his hands slid under Hypnos' thighs to hike the other god onto his waist and carry him to a more secluded area of the Crossroads. Moros knew what he was doing, knew where his body was taking him, but he could do little but watch in astonishment as he carried Hypnos away from his shrine, past the hot spring, out to the wild, forgotten edges of the camp where no one would dare to go. Hypnos kept kissing him the entire way, sometimes pecking at him, sometimes drinking more deeply, but never apart for long, as though going without Moros' lips might suffocate him. Except it wasn't Moros' lips, was it? He had to remember. It was Thanatos whom Hypnos tasted, Thanatos he wanted. Moros was merely an intermediary, the doom of a sleep that passes into death. He didn't mind. How many times had he managed to help anyone, even his own brothers? Mortals feared and hated him; the gods mostly ignored him. But this, this Moros could do. He could give his brothers this, give them peace, give them each other.

Moros tucked the comb into his belt when he was finished, observing his work. Hypnos’ hair was no longer a nest of knots. With its natural waves and the way Hypnos floated amid his bedding, it seemed more like a silver river, a current of starlight bearing him through whatever dreams ensnared him. Thanatos reached with Moros’ hand, Moros’ fingers trembling from the effort. He found a silken spill, lifting it so it could slither over his palm soft as a kiss. Something thumped behind Moros’ heart, an ache so deep it brought Moros down to one knee. He pressed a hand over his chest, waiting for it pass, trying to press reassurance into his body so Thanatos might sense it wherever he was. But that pang was too old, too raw, too desperate. Moros could not soothe it, and Thanatos, apparently, could not bear it. He faded as the ache eased, taking his longing with him.
