People are generally adverse to *looking* evil, whether they are or not. Make them admit it and they become unpalatable to other folks, even if they secretly agree with them. People fiercely protect their self image from harm, even while predicating that image on the thoughts of others.

Expect screaming, threats, wildly angry attempts to change the topic, accusations of gross misconduct... Anything to avoid admitting that yes, in fact, they do want terrible things for people you care about.

Bigots avoid saying the quiet part because they want to trick their way into power.

It's extremely efficatious; In a rush to co-opt the language of compassion (a very effective rhetorical trick for conservatives) they remove the ability to dog-whistle, and admit they can hear the hidden message loud and clear.

Be careful; many of them react poorly to be unmasked.
