I do think trying to do a deeper story in mainline MH games has the inherent flaw of no human character is ever an antagonist. It's just monsters. Which leads to the problems being ultimately very simple.
There's still the fun of uncovering a mystery, but I feel like that's all there is really.

Yeah, I found it so shallow and boring.
It's a shame as I found the comedic moments genuinely very funny, but the attempts at stirring other emotions fell flat.
