I think twitter became what it is because it developed a system that essentially rewarded outrage and conflict with engagement. Learned behavior to survive in that kind of scenario isn't necessary or even good in social media I think.

Twitter had essentially the same blocking features as here with the difference people weren't nearly as aggressive. The tendency is just for people to avoid anything they even slightly don't like.
