Rewatching That Cold Day made me think it’s similar to Rosemary’s Baby in that a woman’s inner circle coerces her into a life she’s not too keen on, but here, the woman is rich, giving her agency and power to dodge them. It’s my favorite Altman.

It’s been 20 years since I first saw The Return at a film festival, and it has not lost any of its 👊. And I’ll stick with Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Misumi’s Ghost of Yotsuya is the best adaptation yet!

Finally got to check de la Iglesia’s quinqui movies. I loved them, but still think I prefer his earlier stuff. I could watch anything filmed in SF during the 1970s (what a city it used to be) and Foul Play has definitely entered my comfort movie canon

Tough Guys: Something about the Lynch atmosphere in a small touristy Portuguese fishermen's town (I was brought up in one) hits me. I found this old DVD of Footsteps in the Fog, which I got from Kim’s Video reco shelf. I miss that Broadway store.

Rollin’s The Iron Rose on Indicator’s UHD was well worth the upgrade. Stir is another impressive Aussie that will stay with you (a lesser Wake in Fright). Great week, all in all.

MARGARET O'DONNELL was born in 1932 in Merthyr Tydfil in Wales and was brought up in England by her grandmother and aunt after her mother died when she was three. She married twice and moved to Ireland in 1968 with her second husband and her three sons. After a number of difficult years for the family when her husband went back to England in 1972, leaving her liable for his debts, she got a job with Family Planning Services, which provided free contraception at a time when women couldn't access it through their GPs. At this time she became involved with the campaign to legalize contraception for all (contra-ception being illegal in Ireland from 1935 to 1980 as a result of Catholic teachings on sexual morality.)
She moved to Kildare with her partner in the late seventies and threw herself into the renovation and expansion of an old thatched cottage.
Being a highly talented and creative person she was equally at home wielding a large power saw or drill as she was weaving ornate tapestries and making batik paintings. Also an accomplished and passionate gar-dener, she created a stunning garden in the grounds of the cottage.
During these years, she found time to write The Beehive, drawing inspiration from her earlier struggles and later activism in the misogynistic Ireland of the time. While she started on a second book, she was not engaged by it, and did not write anything else after The Beehive.
Her relationship broke down in 1990 and the cottage had to be sold.
She moved to an old farmhouse in Wicklow, which she also imaginatively renovated. She moved to Kerry in 2002 to help care for her grand-daughters, and imported a Swedish timber home, which she lived in until her death on New Year's Day, 2019.

I don't miss it, but now that I come back to São Paulo as a visitor, I really enjoy the low humming sound the city makes when you’re not in a busy neighborhood. It’s unique (you don't get to hear sirens as you do in SF or NYC) and interesting if you dig drone-y music.
