homegirlsuniteTW: Financial AbuseFinancial abuse is one of the least talked-about forms of harm faced by eldest and parentified daughters, especially in immigrant, working-class, and culturally traditional households. Many daughters grow up believing it’s normal to hand over their wages, pay household bills, support siblings, or financially “hold the family together” long before they’ve had the chance to build stability for themselves. What gets framed as duty, love, or gratitude is often a deep imbalance of power, one that leaves daughters with limited autonomy, no savings, and a financial identity shaped by guilt instead of empowerment.Through an intersectional lens, this burden hits daughters of colour and daughters from immigrant homes even harder. Cultural expectations around sacrifice, respect, and family honour can mask financial control, entitlement, and exploitation. When your gender, birth order, class position, and cultural role intersect, saying “no” to financial demands can feel dangerous, disloyal, or impossible. But eldest daughters deserve economic freedom. They deserve boundaries. And they deserve futures built on their own choices, not just their family’s needs.
