And yeah, there's WAY more to pokemon than just the battles, frankly the "meta" mentality is what drove me away from a lot of modern pokemon games because of the discourse around it. But more interesting than the stats and spreadsheets are the commentary's these games have from a social perspective.

Ehh, I get the sentiment, but I mean, anything that has a "competitive" scene, be it "Causally competitive" or actually competitive, will have meta's form and optimal strats emerge.
