I would not be surprised if a could chunk of those registered Dems who didn’t vote live in red states where they either a) believe their vote won’t matter or b) know it won’t matter because of gerrymandering.

This coup has been in the making since at least the 60s and 70s. The Movement Conservatives have been working to undo every progressive achievement the USA has made since FDR. The repeal of the FCC's fairness doctrine in 1987 helped them but they still needed decades to build up to this.
