Being cross-cultural sounds great, until it’s not.

When you keep reading about other people’s amazing journeys, your own can easily pale in comparison.

This is one perspective on what it means to switch between cultures from birth. No glamorous life but very much a safe space.
I dip in and out of Poland to find hints around my #identity.

I guess in some ways I’m the product of the #Habsburg #Empire, and before anyone thinks I succumb to delusions of grandeur, that empire also had cobblers & #Roma who settled & milk maids just trying to make a living. 1/10

In the Never A Dull Moment part of our (re)search for inspiration 🥁🥁🥁

Went to Resurrection mass because I wanted to see one in Poland. Was not disappointed. Beautiful old church in Warsaw that looks like a village chapel to me.

The quiet soul sucker type

Their presence is heavy because they are so There. That’s it, that’s their presence. A heavy invisible blanket getting heavier by the minute, increasing with every breath that you take. In and out, in and out.

By punching down.

#Poland Chronicles- the Christening

My host received an invitation to a christening, and while I was perfectly fine entertaining myself elsewhere (as I’d never met the child or its parents) she said that she would go to the ceremony but not the dinner.

This little furball decided to guard me when I used the bathroom in the middle of the night to make sure I was ok.

Got up, heard paws on the floor a few seconds later and came out the bathroom door to find him sitting there waiting for me to go back to sleep.

He doesn’t like most people.

In #Poland to explore & draw inspiration for a new project.

Poland always felt strange and familiar b/c it’s a place I’ve known from the time I was five, so unpacking old conservative, authoritarian (& in my case also #narcissistic) tendencies with an adult mind is always an interesting adventure.

“I believe that by choosing the field of health sciences I assumed a certain responsibility and I have no right to walk past anyone in need of help. It is my duty to help as much as I can.”

These words were uttered by my Polish cosmetologist.

In influencer world, on my feed at least, everyone is praising Finland and extolling its virtues.

No one talks about the everyday. The microaggressions, so subtle you can’t really prove it, but you know it’s there. That unmistakable hatred towards someone you deem as not belonging.

They pile up.

Spending time in #Poland is always an interesting in unraveling childhood experiences with relatives and an adult understanding.

I was raised by a narcissist who grew up in Poland, so for a while the whole nation seemed that way to me. Secretive, manipulative, always out for yourself.

Growing up with parents who were never part of the culture in Germany and the US became an interesting exercise in trying to make sense of the world around me.

It’s why today I’m so passionate about raising awareness of #cross-cultural #identities.

So if you have any questions, ask away.

When we lived in 🇩🇪 in the early ‘90s being French was a really big thing. There weren’t too many French people around & the ones who ran the French Group seemed to try and project some idea of “Frenchness” that seemed to exist mainly in the German mind, as though they were playing up to an idea(l).

I’m passionate about #cross-cultural and #intercultural #identity, which means I talk about my observations on the countries in my profile.

Being cross-cultural means I have outsider & insider knowledge, so those of you who want to #move to these places, I tell you what relocation agencies can’t.

Finland sells you a dream until it doesn’t. Truth is, you’ll find little moments to keep you sane because that’s what humans do. But is it enough to keep you here in the long run? A day at the library is great, until reality hits. There’s good and bad everywhere, but which one can justify the other?

Should I do a series on life in Finland, Germany, Poland, Hungary & France focusing on the microaggressions, bigotry, discrimination and hidden everyday hardships but also the joys and little victories?

Grew up in 🇩🇪&🇺🇸 as a 🇫🇷 citizen & lived in the other places long enough to understand subtleties.

I find it so interesting when people talk about Finland and hold it up as the paradise it wants to be seen as. When reality is more interwoven with everyday subtleties that are more reminiscent of the US climate than people care to admit.

Should I do a series on everyday life in Finland?

Should I do a series on life in Finland as a purely anecdotal observation to put some reality behind the hype? My credentials? 10+ years of experience living in Finland as a French citizen who grew up in the US & Germany and lived in several other countries.

Something that needs to be normalized - though we are talking about it more and more - is our right to let go of parents who were abusive and clearly never had our best interests at heart.

By this I don’t mean constant praise, but teaching, guiding, helping us develop into good human beings.

Exploring a country you semi knew in your #childhood and teens takes on a whole new angle when you #explore it with the benefit of #hindsight and likeminded people by your side. #Poland is an interesting place to be when you’re #notconservative but have the gift of looking beneath layers.

How do you know you’ve made a Finnish friend?

Step 1, they invite you for a walk.

Step 2, they invite you for a sauna session.

Step 3, they invite you to their summer cabin (with the obligatory sauna session).
