Of note, according to a report by the USDA, house mice can carry and spread highly pathogenic avian influenza. As of February 26, 2025, the virus has been detected in mice in the following states: Colorado, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, and Washington.

I can't find data on the types of enclosures and relative risk, but avian influenza spreads primarily through contact with infected birds, their feces, or contaminated environments. Keeping your flock separated from wildlife, particularly wild birds, is helpful to reduce their risk of exposure.

The FDA has stated that it will still issue flu strain recommendations to vaccine manufacturers in time for the upcoming flu season. When asked if the FDA would make the recommendations without input from the independent advisory panel, they did not provide an answer.
