That is true. I did this here as a test quite a while ago. I just drew the base, did some minor squishing on the east and west views. The zako in DDP are more complex, but the workflow would be similar.

Here is something I made for Fire Lancer (shmup I am working on with @trap15.daifukkat.su and @moftsoft.bsky.social )
The left one is the tank base in an older version, and later I decided to give the ground enemies "perspective" to match the backgrounds better. This was done with just eyeballing.

This is the explosion where clearly 3D was used. You can see that it is just a bunch of sphere clumps with some weird texture.

Here are all flying zako rotations (minus the rotors for the helis on the top) I amfairly sure that no 3D was used here, esp not on the top 3, but I reckon also not on the bottom 3. They are fairly wonky in places.

I've been looking at the Metal Slug 1-3 A LOT over the years and noticed this at the end of MS3 stage 2.

1) Crop of the bg just before the boss comes in.
2) Crop with a sprite that was overlayed removed.
3) Just that sprite.
4) Generic smoke puff animation the sprite was taken from.

A bunch of sketchbook doodle pages from the last few days. Feels really good drawing on actual paper again, something I want to do WAY more of. Very out of practise, still feels a bit wonky, but getting back into the groove slowly feels nice.

Another ancient (ca. 2006 I think) digital piece, which I still like. Used a method from a Scott Robertson video. Make some shape sketches with depth using traditional media (markers, inks, whatevs), then scan them and put them into layers. Play with blend modes, find a part you like.

Very old (2009, I think) piece which I still kinda like. Likeness is not great, but the style is fun (tho I rarely do any vector stuff) And the yellow stuff in the back is actual acrylic paint I scanned, which I think works nicely with the graphic approach of the main figure.

A quick mockup of a rock made from 4 rock, 3 bush, and 3 leafy bushel assets. The assets can be used in different palettes to create more depth easily. 2nd image is the parts used and their palette variants. #gamedev #pixelart

Applied an nice crt shader (using shaderglass) to one of the older shots I found on hellsite. I think it looks really nice like this actually, with the low resolution fuzz and all.

Just to demostrate what I meant with my earlier reply. Just throwing "scanlines" on a highres image does not work, imo
