Panel 6: In the clearing is The Elder, who is an elephant and has maybe the worst sheep disguise yet. It's literally 3 pieces of wool strapped around him, one on his back, one on his belly, and one on his head. The one on the head also has fake sheep ears, despite his actual ears being massive because he's an elephant. Panel 1: A full moon in the sky, with a couple of small clouds flanking it but not obscuring it. Panel 2: A wolf in a sheep costume with a blue ribbon howls at it, going "AAOOOOoo". Panel 3: He is joined by another wolf in a sheep costume (with a red ribbon), as well as a few sheep. Panel 4: All of them (both the wolves and the sheep) are now howling at the moon together while a wolf in a yellow ribbon sheep costume observes from a distance. The yellow ribbon wolf has a blank expression -- not happy or sad, but maybe just sort of 'along for the ride' at this point. Panel 5: It is revealed that an elephant, also in a sheep costume, is sitting next to the yellow ribbon sheep costume wolf. He is looking over at the wolf, while the wolf looks forward. Yoshida feels diverse portfolios and smaller projects can deliver stability Does that mean there's cause for quiet optimism? Yoshida believes so, but feels the largest companies need to begin (sensibly) investing in portfolios rather than pinning all of their financial hopes on a handful of gargantuan projects with no margin for error. "Each product is different, right? Some live service games are successful—like Helldivers 2. So you cannot just take one product [or model] and say they're all wrong. Especially with entertainment products, nobody can predict sales, especially when new IPs are tried," he continued. "I've worked with marketers in the past and they always miss the numbers. So, what big companies should do is invest in a portfolio of titles—because if they just invest in a small number of titles it's a huge risk. Even when you invest in existing successful franchises, because people's tastes will change." It's also important, says Yoshida, to moderate the amount invested across that portfolio. He explains that because big companies have to compete with rivals of similar size and stature, budgets can quickly balloon as competitors attempt to outdo each other. The antidote to that budgetary arms race, he suggests, is to realize that "sometimes limitation is really helpful" for studios and developers looking to push themselves creatively.
