For this year's @highquality.rip Art Gallery, I once again made something really stupid.

And finally, their concepts. I almost gave Igualuna more egg shaped crystals on its shoulders as a referebce to SpaceGodzilla, but I ultimately decided to cut that aspect.

Cadetile had a belt-like pattern on its originally but I also took it out.

Igualuna on the other hand grabs design elements from other astronomy related things, such as the moon surface, which inspired the patterns on the eggshells and a rcoket, which became its tail.

Since astronauts originally branched off from air forces, Cadetile also takes some traits from a military buzz cut. Just thought that would be a neat touch.

I thought I'd struggle to come up with something for Aguana but looking at him I randomly thought "astronaut baby" for some reason lol.

Astronauts are often trained underwater so the inspiration worked really well, with Cadetile taking inspiration from rookie astronaut jumpsuits.

Cadetile and Igualuna are both based on marine iguanas, reptiles known for being able to stay underwater for long periods of time.

Notaly there's a version of Godzilla that was a marine iguana so Igualuna kind of blends a bit of that in.

Cadetile and Igualuna

Despite being the most rushed of the entries, they are personal favorites of mine. I do think I could have conveyed the water type better though.

It was pointed out that Igualuna's build sorta resembled Winston from Overwatch but that was merely a coincidence.

Here's the concept stuff for Roburner and Scentallon. My do theselook rough.

Also yes, Scentallon did have a different name originally.

The relation to spirits and those cutures lead to the final piece of the puzzle: incense burners.

Roburner and Scentallon both pull more from copal incense burners, but also feature some elements alluding to the more well known incense burner design.

From there, I decided to blend in more inspirations from indigenous cultures of the south of North America, such as the Hopi and the Mayan.

The former believe these brds could ward evil spirits off, while the latter believed it could induce tiredness in whoever listened to it.

Like Quickindle, both are based on roadrunners, which are birds famous for their running ability.

I didn't know this before designing them but, according to O'odham tradition, this bird was responsible for bringing fire to mankind, neat!

Roburner and Scentallon

Honestly, my weakest designs out of all submissions. I think I tried to cram way too much here, which kind of harmed my execution of the concepts.

Still, it managed to grab the 17th place among fire startes, neat!

Lastly for those two, here's the crude concept art I drew of them before refining the designs. The proportions looked so off looking back lol.
June 15, 2025 at 12:16 AM
Lastly, Ruthturf pulls inspiration from greasers and the Japanese yanki, both types of delinquents known for their hairstyles.

To transition smoothly concept-wise, Rasclaw was made to look more like a teenage delinquent (wearing a hoodie and pants).

Did you know sloths can have plants and algae grow on them thanks to how they stay still for very long? That's where the idea to mix in elements from chia pets and grass head dolls came in.

The latter also inspiring Rasclaw's big nose.
June 15, 2025 at 12:16 AM
Continuing from Sleaf, both evos are based on sloths. Though it's not done very often, I kinda dig when a Pokémon looks more like the real animal as it evolves so I'm happy I could do that for Rasclaw before turning Ruthturf into a Megatherium, an extinct relative of the sloth.

Rasclaw and Ruthturf

These two were the ones I spentmost of my time on and, boy did it pay off. I didn't expect them to get to the Top 10, much less to actually be one the judges' favorite (thanks @thesterninator.bsky.social hehe).

I have once again entered a contest held by @truegreen7.bsky.social! This time the goal was to create evolutions for a trio of starters.

Like last time, here are final thoughts and full explanations for the Pokémon I submitted!

The numbat also has some scent glands that allow it to mark its territory. This capacity of releasing substances coupled with the insectivore diet gave me the idea to mix in elements of a pest exterminator.
Adding a bit of plague doctor in it felt fitting too since the numbat has a long snout.

INSPIRATION

I actually got a gut instinct telling me the original design (Numblanc) was some sort of marsupial. I looked it up and it turns out I was right! It's based on a numbat (also known as walpurti), a small marsupial that eats bugs.
