Here, we have the wonderful and resilient Saxifraga austromontana. Members of the Saxifragaceae often have very inconspicuous flowers, but in the words of one of my colleagues, "it's the kind of magic you have to notice."

Here is Pedicularis groenlandicum, the elephant's head flower, in an alpine meadow. This plant is a member of the Orobanchaceae, a family of plants that utilize parasitism in varying degrees.
Also, please note the wonderful Lupinus latifolius (purple pea shaped fls and palmate lvs). #nativeplants

This is Phylodoce empetriformis or pink mountain heather. It is in the Ericaceae family, a diverse group of flowering plants that share a characteristic urceolate - or urn shaped - corolla.

Two of these are rosids, one is not.

Yes, you guessed it. The two white flowers are both in the rose family. The pink inflorescence is in the currant family.

These families are similar in the number of perianth parts but differ in its color and arrangement.

Our douglas aster (symphyotrichum subspicatum) began to bloom! This sp. is likely an allopolypoid, meaning that it originated as a result of two separate events. First, cross fertilization between two different spp. from the same genus. Second, whole genome duplication.

Never even considered during my time as a Marine that I would be sent to intimidate citizens I voluntarily enlisted to protect.

The tough guy act was always reserved for enemies. It's a shame that Marines these days are deployed and ordered to violate their fellow American's constitutional rights.

Can you tell the difference between clover and sorrel? 🤔

Behold Balsamorhiza sagittata (Arrowleaf balsamroot). It's just one of the West Coast's native sunflowers. Enjoy the day!
