At the risk of being pedantic, I don't see the journo actually asking to leave without buying anything, just hypothesizing about what they would have had to do. How fucking hard is it to take the next journalistic step and see what happens when you try yourself and report it?

Not exactly the point, but close. My first job was pumping gas at a gas station with a full service repair shop. They had this sign hanging in the office and it stuck with me.
Part of the problem, IMHO, is people thinking they will get everything they want with no sacrifices in all phases of life.

IANAL, but I write contracts, amendments, LOAs, etc. as my profession. Is it just me, or is clause 1 here very poorly written?
I had to read it 10 times and mentally remove parentheticals just to understand what they were functionally saying.
