I recommend Ken Ackerman's "Dark Horse: The Surprise Election & Political Murder of James A. Garfield." Ackerman used primary sources, like the Congressional Record, so the accounts of speeches on the Senate floor by Roscoe Conkling (NY) and James G. Blaine (Maine) are colorfully rendered.

Nice to find I'm this photo in the roundup on the @talkingpointsmemo.com site, on the upper right side. Didn't realize I'd wandered into a VIP event that night!

Books section of the @nytimes.com ran this nice photo of Margaret Atwood w/her husband Graeme Gibson in an article by Alexandra Alter about Atwood's new memoir, but they should've done a better job of research and named the woman on Atwood's right, esteemed editor Nan Talese, MA's then-publisher...

While out on a bike ride this morning I could see, from a distance, that a neighborhood association for a foreign nationality was having a Sunday picnic for their members, and I quietly said to myself, “I hope they stay safe with no visit from ICE marauders.” #NYC
