Despite these trends, the El Paso Extreme Weather Task Force does not have any budget and relies on donations to buy box fans. The public health director said he would like to do more but does not have the funding. Under the Trump admin, funding is becoming even more scarce

I obtained data from state and local agencies to understand the scope of heat-related illnesses and heat deaths. Both have gone up. This coincided with record-breaking heat in 2023/24 and an increase in migrants arriving at the border.

Marathon told the press this is "standard" flaring. It's not. It's in excess of their permits. They had to report it to the state. Here is their emissions event report to the TCEQ. Last December, they had another flare that released 113 lbs of sulfur dioxide. That's going into our lungs, folks.

Dust is generated locally and blows into El Paso from S. New Mexico and Chihuahua, especially the former Ice Age lakes known as playas. This year, everything is extra extra dry. Check out this binational drought map. We've also had a windy spring. So drought plus wind equals lots of dust. (3)

1. The still dry Rio Grande.
2. The pecan orchards behind a Supreme Court case.
3. Pumping groundwater like there’s no tomorrow.

I finished the first part of Robert Caro’s LBJ biography. My favorite parts were the descriptions of how grueling life was in the Hill Country and LBJ’s time at Texas State (go bobcats).
