sorry I'm late but this is exactly what they're planning, no?

Sure, you’re right, but it’s an anxiety-riddled holdover from all of the “I thought he was my friend until he suddenly asked me out a year afterwards, I feel lied to” stories I’ve seen or heard over the years. I don’t know how to shake it despite me knowing from my own experience it’s not how it is
September 15, 2025 at 7:57 PM
I’ve been like this sometimes and the reason for it is that I get absolutely terrified of bothering anyone. I don’t want to be That Guy especially if some women wanted to be friends with me. I’ve just heard too many stories from girls is all. I know it’s not healthy, but…

I’ve never thought of us as a particularly great food city, but maybe I’m just not looking in the right places.
September 15, 2025 at 8:53 AM
I suspect the biggest changes would need to be imposed by Victoria, and they've started on that. But I do think the winds are starting to blow the correct way!

I genuinely do think the SkyTrain is the best metro per capita in the US or Canada. Maybe not best overall bc NY exists but not far behind
September 10, 2025 at 11:45 PM
yeah, there's some spikes in density esp in the inner ring suburbs (the centre doesn't as much) for reasons I think are silly

It's mainly that the housing crisis here continues to be really, really bad, especially on a price to income ratio. Much more remains to be done
September 10, 2025 at 11:36 PM
it's a great city! Just prepared for your, uh, bottom line to suffer, especially wrt housing

Wouldn't trade it for anything though. Just needs some more homes, and more trains and buses.
September 10, 2025 at 11:32 PM
A lot of US systems genuinely have better commuter rail. I'd say the NYC commuters, Metra, and Caltrain at least have it better. Certainly Toronto too.

But the SkyTrain is really great where it exists, and I think the bones of the bus network are quite solid.
September 10, 2025 at 11:16 PM
Smug posting: and that's on a branch line, and not even as high as it gets!

We still have a long ways to go though. Our bus system is having similar fiscal issues to a lot of US systems and need a lot of work to be up to standard, and I worry we're being too complacent.

YVR? Or back to MTL?
September 10, 2025 at 10:12 PM
the accomodation with the nimbys is at least partially the point to many in the public and govt I think
September 10, 2025 at 9:05 PM
pretending it's for the sake of the children is what really gets my goat
September 10, 2025 at 4:41 AM
I mainly just think our approach is riddled with problems, locking in vulnerable migrants to exploitative arrangements with their employers on temporary deals while making it as visible as possible in the lowest-upside sectors of the economy, making everyone really mad
September 5, 2025 at 8:28 PM
if you're talking about us, before we trumpet this I think we should check on how it has been going politically for pro-immigration politics in Canada first...it's not been a good time! There are tons of ways we could have done it better. Don't think we're the right model.
September 5, 2025 at 7:54 PM
It’s not about whether it’s central to it (I would agree that it’s not) but whether talking to or inviting these guys suggests that we think that actually how bad can these ideas possibly be, maybe they’re worth paying attention to
September 5, 2025 at 6:51 PM
I’m sorry, but I still want to know why we can talk to a bunch of far right loons and not have it ending up with far right ideals being brought into the liberal mindscape. I think that’s the concern, that people who think this is acceptable in present circumstances are worth being listened to.
September 5, 2025 at 6:49 PM
I’ll get to the point: floating an un-American idea like removing birthright citizenship should make you PNG in a movement I thought was about pluralistic optimism. These are the people who want to tear America down and I don’t think we should be inviting them to speak on our behalf.
September 4, 2025 at 11:31 PM
Well at least it’s like well above majority
September 4, 2025 at 8:55 PM
The TLDR is that Im tired of my NDPs and COPEs et al who seem to think market rate development is a greater threat than status quo
September 4, 2025 at 8:33 PM
I’ve seen it from a lot of genuine leftists and people who want to get in their good graces though. its less common than right-nimbyism but it doesn’t not happen
September 4, 2025 at 8:31 PM
I don’t think this is entirely insignifican-people in Vancouver ninbyworld in and out of government cite Condon all the time for instance. But yes the centre of gravity there is definitely on the conservative side and people shouldnt forget this
September 4, 2025 at 8:30 PM
I have a slightly more complicated view of this, which is that the left-nimby framework which is small in number but popular amongst Thought Leaders gives a progressive sounding framework for people who see themselves as left wing for their existing opposition to change
September 4, 2025 at 8:29 PM
For one thing, massive infrastructure projects and austerity are two things that kind of contradict each other

I am dreading the idea that we're going to waste all of our time building bad infrastructure instead of good ones, though. Those highway and pipeline numbers are *dire*
