"The Hermit Crab God" by ego_bot Even though this story came out at the tail end of August, it has a real Halloween horror feel. Koji, a marine biology student, sees the worst in the world and in humanity. He seems to enjoy being cruel, yet that cruelty also haunts him. He goes out of his way to take his anger and guilt out on hermit crabs. I don't typically read stories involving animal abuse, but the point the author was making, about nihilism and environmentalism and not giving up, made it worth diving into. I finally watched Vicious (2025) on Paramount+ this weekend.

I love small, high concept, sandbox horrors.
It is worth a watch.

moodsandtenses There's something hilarious about how so much subsequent media has positioned Vampires and Werewolves as, like, binary opposite entities, and then you read Dracula (1897) and realize that wolves are that guy's preferred solution to every problem. You'd say something to Dracula about "ah yes, werewolves, vampires' great eternal enemies," and he'd just be like "you mean my subcontractors?" ••• moodsandtenses I'm really enjoying the growing consensus in the notes that there's an Eternal Rivalry Between Vampires and Werewolves now, entirely because the werewolves, sick of Dracula's bullshit, have unionized.

Audiences can easily understand what they may get out of an anthology TV series like Black Mirror or Inside No. 9, as opposed to a feature film, and I think that we should consider marketing short story collections in this way. There’s never been a better time for ’vibes’ to be taken seriously as a major selling point.”

This is why "inbred American" horror exists as a genre.

However, horrors like these perpetuate a stereotype that helps to enforce distrust and ridicule.
Sometimes, horror tropes ride the line between commentary and alienation.
