Moreover it doesn’t explain why sentiment suddenly changed! People’s material circumstances haven’t changed drastically, so why would these unobserved variables change? People are the same stretch of bad luck away from hardship as they were 10 years ago.

From the first article this was clearly a case of MIT faculty either 1) not mentoring at any serious level; or 2) thinking too highly of their students.

I’m in a 20-something ranked program and my advisor would’ve been massively skeptical if I approached them with something like this.

I recently read this Montero and Yang paper on the effects of religious festivals on agricultural productivity. They're very open about the anthropological work that led them to start this study, but that anthropological work hadn't actually quantified the productivity losses!

What's tiring about this specific complaint about economists is that we're usually very good at citing the literature in other fields that we're working off of. We know we're not discovering things, we're just trying to provide rigorous causal evidence for them!

Will, one can talk about “feelings” of poverty without fully detaching the argument from real material conditions.

I would recommend reading Martin Ravallion (was well known as a leader in the study of poverty within mainstream economics) on the possibility of a social subjective poverty line.
