A first-draft, unformatted, 450-word example of what I mean: the gremlin petition.
PETITION We, the residents of this city, demand that the municipal government prioritize the increasing destructive behaviour of the invasive species Kappa aquaparus, commonly called gremlins. Gremlins are not native to this region. They have no natural predators and their complex behaviours notoriously are difficult for the local wildlife to overcome. Our annual rainfall is more than high enough to create exponential growth that will, it is estimated, potentially lead to the collapse of the ecosystem within our county within three years at best. Gremlins are strongly attracted to human settlements. They are typically not aggressive unless approached. However, they are extremely destructive. They are excellent climbers and groups of males have been observed scaling poles to break streetlights and even traffic lights. They target motion-tracking lights and porch lights. Businesses are being forced to turn off all lighting, inside and out, when they close for the night, regardless of insurance requirements, and households are adding heavy blackout curtains if they wish to be active after dark, since gremlins will break windows in an attempt to access lights. They will steal anything that is shiny or is of a strong simple primary or secondary colour, not only children’s toys or yard decor left outside but wiring, personal electronics, purses and bags, jewellery, and in one unfortunate case, Joyce Hafner’s small dog’s rhinestone collar and metallic blue coat. They are a threat even to pets who do not harass them, and keeping pets strictly indoors unless closely supervised is not a guarantee of safety, since gremlins have found or created access into houses and seem to prefer ones that have resident companion animals. Veterinarians believe that the gremlins do not carry any illness or parasites which can be transmitted to humans or pets, but they cannot be certain that is the case or will continue to be. The theft and destruction combined are costing the municipality and individual residents a considerable amount both financially and in time, inconvenience, safety, and other less tangible ways. A humane method should, of course, be preferred in eliminating this problem. We recognize that these are simply animals following their instincts and the blame rests on our previous neighbour who brought one illegally into town and then acted irresponsibly. However, the municipal government has not taken the situation seriously. The time for debate over where the funding will come from, whether inconvenient steps must be taken, and how it will make our city look on the global stage is past. Action is required immediately, and we call on our elected officials to fast-track an investigation into options and then do something definitive while we still have a town! BTW, the last Pride I took part in, I handed these out free. I bought mixed pony beads and made as many flags as I could in varied styles. I ran out of nicer cord but I guess no one cared, because I gave out a LOT.

A quiet dawn moment from my isekai serial Quincunx: MC Nathan waking from a nightmare to find artist Terenei already up. Following the kind of conversation you have only under those conditions, the sun starts to creep into sight.
I fell silent to watch as, on the faintly-backlit page, Terenei captured the rising of the sun: the long shadows of the trees, the glorious colours of the sky, the glow of light along the bottom of the few long lazy clouds, the silhouettes of waking birds and squirrels, all of it through that drifting ghost of early-morning mist that gave it an unworldly and ethereal atmosphere. As the light around us increased, the hint of backlighting faded away, so it was only an normal page, but that clearly made no difference at all to the swift work of choosing brushes, dipping them in the water and finding which of the watercolour bricks with scarcely a glance down, and bringing the image to vibrant life. That wasn’t some kind of magical enhancement. It was impossible to mistake the intense focus to the exclusion of all else, the experienced motions born of endless practice, the confidence and precision. Terenei was, very simply, an excellent artist. Technically, the painting itself didn’t really glow or change. I could see that. And yet, it somehow felt like it should, like if you gazed at it long enough you’d see the dawn continue on into morning. How could a watercolour painting feel like it captured more of the reality of the scene than the best photograph ever could? Right then, I finally got what Serrula and Aryennos had tried to explain at the Seashell, and Terenei and Nurea had tried to explain over lunch. Magic here wasn’t something separate from who someone was and whatever it was that made them feel alive. It was an intrinsic part of it. They couldn’t break it down for me because it was a struggle for them to conceive of magic in isolation. The school we were expecting to reach tomorrow or the next day didn’t teach magic—it taught a refinement of art or craft, although I wasn’t at all sure that there was a distinction between them here.

The only thing I’ve ever said to you is that I wasn’t interested in visiting you. That was absolutely the truth, believe me.” “How dare you act like you have any right to pretend you’re a woman of any species? The Quincunx doesn’t make mistakes but it can get confused. It gave you a female centaur form! That almost certainly means that you’re one of those men who feel entitled to pretend that you have any idea what it really feels like to be a woman.” “How about what it feels like to be part of a minority even more the target of violence and discrimination than women? Since I’m guessing you’re defining ‘what it feels like to be a woman’ as ‘have experienced patriarchal gender-based oppression,’ and you had better believe that trans people know all about that, sometimes from cis women. And I could point out that being a woman is less of a leap than having four legs, or fur and a tail, or being amphibious! Unicorn, horse, nightmare, and donkey ambled along the road, and their riders made no effort to hurry them. “So,” Neon said, “he’s swaggering around like God’s gift to women. One of the ones who creates a character built like a steroid-pumped jock and then adds a ton of armour to look even more big and bad. In this case, he went Dwarf, and damned if the little prick wasn’t using his height as an excuse for some extra grabs and gropes, y’know? And most of the women there were, Idunno, too young, too insecure, too new, whatever, to do more than yelp or give him dirty looks, maybe call him a creep, that’s about it, right? Well, he tried it on me. And I was having none of it. I’m good with guys as friends and all, but sex is girls-only, y’know? But I’d call out the cutest girl in the world on behaviour like that.” “Personal space,” Jessamine said. “Learn about it and respect it, asshole. So what did you do?” “I called him on it—grabbed his grubby little hand and yanked upwards, and offered to remove it for him if he couldn’t figure out where it was appropriate for it to be. Next thing you know, there’s this enormous freakin’ Orc pulling us apart. We argued back and forth a bit about the Dwarf’s behaviour. This Orc had only just arrived and hadn’t seen it, and refused to believe me just how bad it was. He insisted that this Dwarf was part of his Guild, and that he’d vouch for him.” “Guild of Silence, I suppose?” Elavetha said. “And the Orc was BlightTheBloodied?” “Got it in one. I finally got sick of the excuses, or maybe the misplaced loyalty if I wanted to be really generous, and challenged him to a duel. He could hardly say no with so many people around, although he did make one try at it—something about not hitting girls. We got outside and faced off, and he started swinging that damned club around. I’ll spare you the blow-by-blow account, mostly because I don’t remember all of it, but he couldn’t match my speed so he never managed a solid blow, just a few glancing ones. Mostly I didn’t have a lot of luck either, though, my staff was just bouncing right off him. Just between us, it was as much luck as skill: I managed to get my staff tangled between his legs and tripped him when he overextended just a bit for a swing at me—he was getting pretty mad by then. He went down seriously hard, just boom and the earth shook, and I finally got a clear shot. Slammed one end of my staff against his skull, right behind one ear, as hard as I could. That was it, duel over. I made the little Dwarf prick apologize to all the women present and promise to keep his hands to himself, and then walked out.” Both companions laughed, Elavetha quietly, Jessamine with all-out merriment. “Well done,” Elavetha said. Neon shrugged. “Honestly, it was a bitch of a fight, and there were moments I started to worry a bit about whether I’d gotten in over my head, but hey, it worked. And maybe the Dwarf learned something about treating women as sex objects. Without consent and all. I don’t mind being treated as a sex object, but ask first, y’know? I doubt it, but I can hope.” “It’s unlikely either one learned anything from it,” Elavetha said. “Other than to be careful about confident women who are perfectly willing to fight. But hey, who knows? It’s not like, in order to grasp the concept of respect, one really has to have been born...” She broke off. “Nope,” Neon said cheerfully. “Gender and anatomy and chromosomes have nothing to do with it. Or with how I pick friends, just for the record. There’s just those annoying gamer bros that are so obsessed with their own...” She looked up. “Oh shit.” Jessamine and Elavetha followed her line of sight. A small humanoid figure in white hovered high above, visible mostly due to the extremely scaled-up brilliant hummingbird wings. Circling it were a pair of black-and-white dire eagles, each larger than the hovering Fairy. “There is just no way there’s a Fairy travelling with that bunch,” Elavetha said. “Where are all these people coming from? More immediately, Jess, can you stop those eagles?” “I doubt it,” Jessamine said. “That’s almost certainly out of my range for anything that could subdue or charm them.” “What kind of range does your healing have?” Neon asked. “Oh, sure, that I can do. Why?” “Because it looks to me like that Fairy has one arm hanging limp and one moving stiffly, and it’s already a tough fight.” Jessamine immediately drew Glitter to a halt, and raised both hands in the air, fingers spread and the Fairy framed between thumbs and forefingers. Swiftly, she murmured the spell. Sunset light glowed briefly around the Fairy. Seconds later, something invisible pushed the eagles back. Every time they tried, they were shoved away again. It didn’t seem to hurt them, but it certainly frustrated them. “Wind,” Jessamine said approvingly. “Not killing, just deflecting.” The Fairy descended, with control so smooth that it was blatantly obvious: this was not a new player, or even an experienced one who had had no practice with Anterra’s flight mechanics. That was a skilled player who had seriously mastered flight.

Another visitor meeting a house resident in Haunted: ghost debunker meets invisible woman.
Lennox spun around, flashlight sweeping the area, but he didn’t see anyone. “Who’s there?” The female voice chuckled. “You just looked right over me. You were watching for a face, I imagine. Try that again, more slowly.” “What are you talking about? Who are you?” He scanned the direction the voice seemed to be coming from, more thoroughly. And stopped short. “There you go,” the voice said. “You found me.” “What... okay, that’s a really sweet trick, but how are you doing that?” “It’s not a trick. I’m just me.” It was obviously a trick. Because all he could see was clothing: low red boots with substantial wedge heels, white lace stockings that vanished up under the ragged bottom edge of very faded denim shorts, a sheer red close-fitting sleeveless top over a well-filled white bra, white lace fingerless gloves that appeared to run halfway past elbow-length, a red suede collar. All of it outlined a body with comfortable curves. He could even see dangly earrings, metallic scales that were a mix of red and white. Possibly the most bizarre was that he could see what must be makeup, just deep red glossy lips and heavy black eyeliner with a dusting of pearly white just above. The lips appeared to be smiling, and the rest of the body language suggested someone who was relaxed and non-threatening. But there was no one inside those clothes. A simple enough trick when using a green screen, but in person? “It has to be a trick.” “It is not a trick,” she repeated. “You’re in a haunted house on Hallowe’en. Were you expecting to see nothing outside of your normal life? I’m Wanda. And yes, I’m invisible. To you, anyway. Only sometimes, to my family. What are you doing?” “I, um, I’m looking for any signs of paranormal activity.” He frowned at her giggle. “I investigate claims and debunk them. I have yet to find anything that couldn’t be explained rationally.” “So having found an invisible woman while investigating, and not having a rational explanation, you simply conclude that it is a trick you don’t know but simple truth is impossible.” She sounded amused. She came closer to him, and one lace-gloved hand reached towards him. He felt a warm hand against his cheek, but he still couldn’t see anything except clothing. “I’m right here.” It was just not possible. He reached down, jerking open the flap over the pocket halfway down his right thigh. “What are you looking for?” “My phone has extra hardware that allows it to see infrared. Heat images.” She giggled again. “Cheeky! Are you trying to see through my clothes? All right, go ahead and try.” He pulled out his phone, checked that the camera was plugged in solidly, and turned it on. When he raised it and scanned the area, it unequivocally showed him a human shape, with distinctly feminine curves that under other conditions he would have considered rather intriguing. When he lowered the phone and raised the flashlight again, however, spotlighting her in the dim yellow-tinged illumination, he could see only clothes. “Okay, it’s a brilliant trick. If I turn off the camera and promise not to tell anyone, will you tell me how you’re doing it?” “Sure.” Lennox turned off the camera on his chest. “The one over there is still on and pointed at us,” she said. “But I don’t mind.” She stepped closer to him, and he felt her breath on his skin, just ahead of his ear. “I’m invisible because I live in a house full of what you’d call monsters and this is what I happen to be.” She kissed his cheek and laughed, then spun around and sauntered away, invisible hips swaying under her cutoff shorts. She climbed a few steps of one of the paired great staircases and sat down there. Probably she was watching him.

From my novel Haunted, which is a cozy Hallowe'en night haunted-house monster adventure, a first meeting for the ages. LOL
The other had the artist. An easel supported a canvas, and the artist was perched on a sturdy stool, a palette in one hand and a brush in the other. A stand close at hand held a jar of water with other brushes in it and several other things, with shelves underneath offering tubes that Leo thought were paint. The artist himself was startling. Large hands nonetheless manipulated the brush with delicacy, adding a highlight to the crest of a gentle wave. He was wearing only worn jeans cropped at the knees and with a hole for a tail, and a blue-and-grey cotton shirt with nearly the entire sleeves torn raggedly off, probably open down the front. Leo tried to breathe quietly, staying absolutely still. Should he say something and possibly interrupt? Keep going and let the artist keep working in peace? An ear flicked backwards. “I hear you.” That voice was a rumble, but not so deep that Leo had any trouble understanding. “I don’t mind.” “I wouldn’t want to keep you from working. These paintings are majorly awesome.” The minotaur shrugged, and dipped his head in a way that Leo realized suddenly was shyness. “I always loved it. That’s all. The house is what brings them alive.” “I bet there’s more to it than that. I doubt any effort of mine would come alive. Actually, I think it would be a frightening thing if they did, considering how bad my artistic skill is.” The minotaur snorted, possibly with amusement. “Everyone’s different.” “You have all the rooms in the servants’ quarters to work in?” “The others call it my labyrinth.” “Seems safer in this one than the original.” “Can’t think why the minotaur in the original one would eat people. Or any other meat. Not exactly biologically appropriate.” “I, ah... I’m with you on that one.” The minotaur turned his head, enough to allow one large dark eye to see Leo. “Yeah?” “I don’t fuss over ethical dairy or eggs, or maybe a bit of fish once in a while, but that’s it.” “Cool. I’m Jake.” “Leo.” “Someone tell you Mistress’ usual warning already?” “The bit about no leaving before sunrise, no one psychotic lives here, go explore and embrace the experience? Tarragon did.” “Good. You need that.” “I gotta ask about the cat painting. That’s not a real cat, is it?” Jake shook his head, ears flopping. “Would never hurt one or trap one. Just a painting. The cat’s safe. We confine the animals out of the way on Hallowe’en night. The dancer next to it is downstairs. My family model for me all the time.” “You have pets here?” “Wouldn’t want to live anywhere with none. But never know how guests are going to act.” “Yeah, I bet.” “You’re really calm. Guests usually aren’t.” “I’m always a bit weird. I mean, I spend my spare time visiting haunted houses and trying to talk to ghosts to help them move on. Just in case they have unfinished business or haven’t realized they’re dead.” That was, of course, only the most obvious way he never quite belonged, but it was easier than trying to explain anything else. “That’s a kind thing to do. Do you actually find ghosts?” “It’s hard to prove, but I’m pretty sure. Either that or I’m majorly good at deceiving myself, which I guess is possible. I’ve had some experiences that I consider kind of hard to explain any other way, but it’s not like I have any actual hard evidence that ghosts even exist. So maybe I’ve wasted a lot of time and effort, or maybe I’ve helped out some people who were stuck. Idunno. Do ghosts exist?” Jake shrugged and made that snorting sound again. “Hell if I know. I’m not dead. Maggie might know.” “Who’s Maggie?” “Look for a cat in a maid outfit.”

Yin-Yang: As close to dystopia as I've ever written, but it started as a D/s fantasy. In something like our world, mages have power & status, but sensitives live on the run, terrified of mages. Not all mage-sensitive relationships are the same, and some mages are willing to take a stand.

There was nowhere to go except past one of them, and that would slow her enough for the other to catch her. Not yet! She still had twenty-eight hours left! After that she didn’t care, but to be stopped now? Tecton, the armoured figure, laughed, and she whirled back towards him. “Gotcha, girlie. Your psychic shit won’t work on us. We can have some fun before Gecko and I take you back to the League, though. All those pics don’t lie, you really are fuckable as hell.” “Dude, seriously?” The new voice was young, male, and utterly disgusted, and coming from behind her. Carnal was getting dizzy, trying to watch both ends at once. “’Rapey pricks in a dark alley’ is a villain trope. Have you looked at your job title lately?” Two new people strolled along the alley. Gecko scrambled down the wall towards them, but the darker figure, the male of the pair, glanced to the side and flung a hand in his direction. Light, or maybe lightning, flashed, and Gecko tumbled off the wall into a pile of old furniture, small tables and kitchen-type chairs and low shelving units, that presumably was waiting to be picked up. “Hey, guess what?” the dark young man said. “Electrostatic energy disrupts van der Waal’s force. Be smart and stay down, lizard-boy.” The only thing they had in common physically was that each was wearing a collar of rolled metal with a dangling ring at the front, that same rainbow metal. “We’ll handle these two, hon,” the woman said to Carnal, beckoning to her. Torn between caution and relief, Carnal made her way in that direction, though not without wary looks behind her at Tecton. Worse was getting closer to Gecko, who was groaning and moving like he might be trying to find his feet. “You have fans waiting for wherever you’re planning to appear next. Aside from us, that is. Come on. This pair won’t be following you.” “They’re not classy enough for you, gorgeous,” her male companion said cheerfully. “You deserve better. I’m sure we’ll see you around. Ah ah, Tecton, I see those gauntlets get any closer to each other or one foot come off the ground and I’ll remind you what some serious voltage through metal armour feels like.” “Insulation,” Tecton said mockingly, raising both hands, fists towards each other and a foot apart. That elicited only a melodramatic sigh. “Fine, make me work for it.”
