The survey also finds that 58% of Americans agree that “ICE officers should not be allowed to conceal their identity with masks or use unmarked vehicles when arresting people,” including most Democrats (84%) and independents (64%), but only 31% of Republicans

Americans are divided about whether “the system of checks & balances in our government is working as it should” (46% agree v. 50% disagree), while 56% agree that “President Trump is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy,” up from 52% in March

NEW: The 16th annual PRRI American Values Survey, released in partnership with @brookings.edu, finds that majorities of Americans say that Trump's cuts in funding for health care (60%), implementation of new tariffs (54%), and increase in funding for ICE (52%) have gone too far.

PRRI’s latest survey finds that Americans are evenly divided in their views of how President Trump is handling immigration (48% approve, 49% disapprove). Nearly all Republicans (90%) approve of the job Trump is doing on immigration, compared with 48% of independents and 13% of Democrats

On Wednesday, OMB Director Russell Vought said the Trump administration will start firing federal employees in the next “one to two” days.
PRRI found that 55% of Americans agree “President Trump has overstepped his authority by ordering the mass firing of federal employees across multiple agencies.”

- Nearly 1/2 of Americans said they believe Republicans are determined to stay in power even if it means resorting to political violence

- Since 2016, both Democrats & Republicans have shown a decrease in seeing their own party as a serious threat to the country and an increase in seeing the opposing party as a threat, suggesting stronger alignment within each party.

In PRRI polling conducted after the start of President Trump’s second term, a majority (52%) of Americans agree that “President Trump is a dangerous dictator whose power should be limited before he destroys American democracy.”

Men are more likely than women to hold favorable views of Trump (42% vs. 37%), a gap consistent with March 2025 levels (43% vs. 37%). This gender gap in Trump favorability is evident across all racial groups, except for Hispanic Americans.

Today, 49% of white Americans hold favorable views of Trump, compared with 28% of Hispanic Americans and 15% of Black Americans. While favorability has fluctuated across all groups, white Americans are the only group to show a constant increase since June 2023, rising from 36% to 49% in May 2025.

The vast majority of Republicans (87%) hold favorable views of Trump, up from 83% in March 2025. Among independents, 35% currently hold a favorable view of Trump. Favorability among Democrats remains significantly lower at 6%, similar to March of this year (8%) and throughout 2024.
