There’s also an online journal called «Шрифт» that has some interesting deep dives into handwriting styles through the ages—the footnotes there are a goldmine to find some of the older sources on the topic.

Depending on your comfort level reading Russian, have you looked into any of the Soviet-era books on the development of handwriting? There are some really interesting ones that show how it changed through time and by region that can be really helpful to orient yourself!

There are a few alternatives here in other answers that could work too—if you were able to share a photo that included some more words around it for context, I bet we could crack it or at least rule out if it’s a place name or proper name.

My best guess as someone with a PhD in 18th-c. Russian (so caveat this is not my handwriting of expertise) would be that it is Rozhan, as in the name of a city/town. The direct transcription would be Рожанъ.

The board of trustees is covering research expenses to the tune of ~$10M/WEEK. This is not sustainable. Critical health related research (into ALS, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, cancer…) will end if funding isn’t restored. Cures of the future will not be developed. Patients of all types will suffer.
