Their (also fantastic) debut seems to get more lasting attention, but I prefer the 2nd/final release. Rough around the edges post-punk instrumentation with just positively transcendent songwriting. Almost makes me angry how good these songs are while being so bare bones.

Don't understand the lukewarm reception on this one at all, found it to be a brilliant blend of O'Malley's past work with Sunn and the modern classical drone work of his now-wife Kali Malone. Played it right back after the first listen.

Steve Albini is one of the more over-glazed figures in rock music history but some of his work is undeniable -- and he certainly brought out the best of Sunn. Despite being their most layered work, this is sonically gorgeous and hi-fi. Crisp, bright, life-affirming.

Boris took their name from an early Melvins song and they are wearing that influence on their sleeve here. Hypnotic, molasses slow bass riffs layered with meandering feedback, building to a climactic entrance of drums, harsh vocals and noise. Crushing and meditative.

Have had a real fascination with drone music for a bit now (especially for reading time). Endlessly impressed by how some artists can communicate with such sparse compositions. Radigue was an early progenitor and remains one of the best. Profound, grounding.
