Wealth screening can help you determine a person’s potential as a major donor through their capacity (ability to give), affinity (interest in your cause), and proximity (how easy they are to reach). But without further research, it doesn’t reveal their motivation for giving.

If you want unrestricted major gifts, build long-term trust with your supporters.

When a charity is transparent about its research, communicates clearly with donors, and embeds that openness into its culture, donors stop trying to steer and instead trust your judgement.

So if you don’t have a prospect research project already planned, skip it. Instead wealth screen your database to find existing supporters who could become major gift donors.
