This is an extremely funny article, tbh; the author claims to be an "investigative journalist", but their first two "attempted profiles" are obviously just puff pieces of the worst kind (little wonder that their editors pushed back!).

"While Kate was reading the output of a serious historian, Tom was microwaving his brain on shitty propaganda."

...and we're supposed to be rooting for Tom here?

Exhibit A: Every piece you've ever written about self-ID and "single sex spaces".

It's not intentional support, but the worldview presented is perfectly sympatico with the gutter bigotry displayed by men like Lonsdale.

I'm normally hesitant to even say what I do beyond generalities, but good fucking God that place is a clusterfuck.

If I ever meet an FSO who really needs that one last push to resign or retire, I'm just going to refer them to that subreddit.

Maybe they'll just buy SpektreWorks and jack up the price.

Isn't that where they get most of their concepts?

(except perhaps the anime missiles that will surely exist one day)

Man, that's a blast from the past. I don't think I've heard "USian" regularly since the heyday of the mid-late 2000s blogosphere, and it was just as goofy sounding then too.

Is there a good writeup of the reasons for this anywhere, or is this one of those things where all the reasons are behind closed doors and we only get the bottom line?

Most of the ones who think like this stayed behind on Musk Xitter where they belong, apparently!

Comparing this to the Nazis is entirely appropriate.

Putin's invasion of Ukraine is not meaningfully different from Hitler's invasion of Czechoslovakia.

War is awful and should be avoided in most cases, but sometimes the war simply has to be fought. Ukraine is a clear example.

At some point I'll need to actually read up on what the thought process with those guns was supposed to be.

It seems crazy to me that they didn't just stick VLS cells in those places, but tbh maybe that would have gone just as badly and wouldn't help at all.

You'd think someone who spent years being witch hunted by some of the same people for no real reason would understand this instinctively, and yet...

A theory like gravity is a theory, as the meme goes.

He's survived for so long on raw eggs that he's forgotten what a fajita even is.

Thanks for translating, I couldn't figure out what exactly I was supposed to be looking at here

I can't seem to find it again, but I seem to recall a time on The Other Site when Noah Smith or one of the hype men in that orbit were utterly shocked to discover that proximity fuzing was a technology that predates the transistor, not some new defense tech innovator™ creation.

It's a sentence that wouldn't be out of place in a Lothrop Stoddard book from the 1920s, but somehow we're supposed to take the sentiment seriously now.
