Setti Warren was only 55 years old and the first African American elected mayor in MA, serving people in Newton.

Since 2022, Warren has directed the Harvard Institute of Politics out of the the Harvard Kennedy School.

Rest in peace and condolences to his family.

Olaudah Equiano was so elegant and his intelligence & impecable style are evident in his image in at front, the writing, and marketing.

I love how the full title includes "Written by Himself". I love even more that the volume on loan from the Schomburg said:

"Printed For and Sold By the Author"

The Dred Scott decision was 1857.

John Blanchard painted stevedore and elected official Thomas Howell's portrait between 1850 and 1856, so he was already over it.

Exact reply to his passport request at link is infuriating.

In 1857, Thomas Howland became Providence, RI's first Black elected official.

Later that year, he decided to emigrate to Liberia with his wife & daughter after the Dred Scott case denied Black people protections of U.S. citizenship. He was denied a passport.

I love yellow squash and have it every week in various dishes. 🤭

Originally, power controls and binary switches were denoted with the words on and off. As tech evolved, the words were replaced with the line "|" for "on" and circle "0" for "off" meaning a closed electrical circuit . In 1973, these two symbols were combined into one icon, initially referred to as "standby." Thirty years later, an international committee of scientists and engineers recommended that this combined symbol should stand for its more commonly accepted understanding: power. @sign: Deeply embedded in contemporary life the @ symbol is actually centuries-old. Some scholars believe it dates back to the sixth century AD; others believe it originated in sixteenth-century Florentine trade as a symbol of an amphora, a vessel whose size became a standard unit of measure. The @ began to appear on typewriter keyboards in the nineteenth century. Because of its use in commerce and accounting, it became known as the "commercial a.?"in 1971, when Tomlinson engineered the world's first email system for the US government's Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), he chose the @ symbol to connect a user's name and the location in the host terminal because it was an existing and underused key on the keyboard as well as a fiting preposition Google pin: Google Maps has changed the way we move around the worid. Originally, the pin featured a black dot at its the precise location on the map. Over time, ,the dot was removed, further simplifying the pin while retaining its recognizability.

The BEAUTY part of #Superfine: Tailoring Black Style show has a quote from Saidiya Hartman's "Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments".

They had shirts worn by Prince and by Sylvester among other things.

These men were defined by the chic spectacularity of their fashion and grooming, and their "fire red, lime green,/ burnt orange / royal blue" clothing intensified their desirability. Touting the "brand new pleasure" that she and others took in their appearance, she praised the confidence they exuded and the fabulousness of their style and stances. During and after the civil rights and Black Power movements as well as the sexual revolution and gay and lesbian rights movements of the late 1960s, Black men gained social visibility with a form of radiance that relied on pride and panache. This cultural confidence and interest in self-regard allowed for an experimentation with unconventional modes of masculine dress. "Beauty" transitions from historical and contemporary fashions that radiate light to those that are saturated with color. Featuring drapery, lace, ruffles, and sequins, the garments also emphasize Black dandyism as a mode of dress that approaches and appropriates femininity as part of its transgressive power.

I saw Kyle Abraham's A.I.M. and the show had a live three-piece jazz ensemble on stage and two PHENOMENAL singers were featured. The first chanteuse sounded like Abby Lincoln and the other Billie Holliday-esque.

Kyle himself performed his dance choreographed to Nina Simone's "Ne Me Quitte Pas".
