9/ In our digital age of endless scrolling of isolated (and increasingly artificial) images, photography books remind us of the power of thoughtful curation and context. They're not just collections of photos - they're conversations between artist, reality, and reader.

8/ The readers' interpretation isn't cast on the artist's, but rather the artist's literal view of reality. Rather than thinking "why is reality depicted as such?", it is "what meaning do these captures of reality have?" That, to me, is an incredible experience that deserves to be more widespread.

7/ All these factors combine to creating a work of art that is unique and counter-intuitive. Despite being a literal representation of reality, every reader will walk away with a completely different understanding of the message and meaning, each one just as valid as the next.

6/ Social media like Instagram or DeviantArt remove the artist's ability to compose their own layout, rendering the collection of works as what is essentially a large bucket full of "stuff". Each photo MUST be able to exist on its own, without much in the way of guaranteeing any kind of continuity.

5/ The book exists as a whole, superseding the individual photographs that compose it as the artwork. Largely speaking, it is this element that has been taken away from most of our consumption of photography in recent years by various social media platforms.

4/ Rather, the photographer, given reality as-is, chooses how to frame the shot, what subjects to include, what methods to use to develop the photograph, what paratext to include; and, in the case of a book, how to lay out the work.

3/ That isn't to say that photography isn't art, even if historically it is this very argument that was used to discredit the medium as a whole.

2/ Photography as a whole already exists a bit apart from the other artforms. It is uniquely non-interpretive: while a painter, a writer, or a musician captures their perception and interpretation of reality within their work, the photographer is given reality as it is observed by the camera.
