It’s definitely good news overall, but I would like to see more concrete info on if or how they are planning on avoiding accidentally selling off land needed for service expansions and electrification in future.

Something like this tech from the Netherlands infrafoundations.nl/en/project-h... which they also use for catenary foundations or precast foundations you can just bury in the ground would be quite helpful if attempted nowadays
Project HKVs in collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat.
Rijkswaterstaat has recently started laying the first foundation piles in Groningen, at the Gerrit Krol Bridge. We have been asked to lay the foundation.

I have still not seen those either. I’d love to learn more on how that project was executed

Following overhaul, with VCC yes
August 19, 2025 at 2:07 AM
You can’t avoid that in some places
August 19, 2025 at 2:05 AM
You also need to account for m7’s and m9’s existing for decades

Plenty of EU trains support 1.5kv, 3kv 15 and 25
August 19, 2025 at 1:56 AM
Definitely not my preferred option to do it by hand, fortunately in 2025 there are plenty of electronic solutions to avoiding voltage or ac/dc trouble. There are also ways to avoid the need for neutral sections using SFC’s when at the same voltage.
August 19, 2025 at 1:48 AM
Definitely glad NJDOT moved it to AC, it makes this much easier
August 19, 2025 at 1:39 AM
Not necessarily although that would work. Some railroads eBay swap pans just drop and coast. You could also add a switch in the cab, or if one exists just add another position.

There are studies with numbers that I’ll dig up later tonight.
August 19, 2025 at 1:35 AM
If M&E was dc you would just need dc pans if you couldn’t share with ac. Trains have DC busses anyway.

Penn to gct I’d prefer to use metro north. If you are doing a tunnel from west end at a minimum you would want catenary at GCM platforms to change to third rail there which is less of a challenge.
August 19, 2025 at 1:26 AM
It might work, but once we see the exact profile we can more closely compare to the UK research.
August 19, 2025 at 1:23 AM
I’d love to take a look at those for both Atlantic and 63rd if you come across them in your archive @ndhapple.bsky.social
August 19, 2025 at 1:19 AM
This is not something I’d do for PSA mitigations. Unless you did more catenary expansions on metro north, or connected Penn tracks 1-5 to GCT it’s likely not worth adding catenary there.
August 19, 2025 at 1:13 AM
Yes, This is not something you would want to jury rig even if it had feet of extra clearance. Having a pan dewire down there would not be a good thing. It would need proper planning.
August 19, 2025 at 1:11 AM
Agreed, but unless I see a blueprint of that, I’m not going to say it’s 100% impossible. The MNCR level, is definitely possible though.
August 19, 2025 at 1:08 AM
Unless you dug an older odd m series out of a museum without antennas on the roof like they did to the m3, not in the US that I’m aware of. You would need to do a new build of stock
August 19, 2025 at 1:06 AM
Yes, but while I’m confident you can use our m10 concept(or @ndhapple.bsky.social’s similar one) in that tunnel with pans down, i am not sure if it’s possible to wire that as I haven’t seen the clearance diagrams of the tunnel/line for 63rd and GCM
August 19, 2025 at 1:03 AM
The loading gauge on park ave is much more generous than 63rd is.
August 19, 2025 at 1:01 AM
I would be shocked if you can’t put wires down there using a combo of VCC techniques, and cutting the ballast depth a bit
August 19, 2025 at 12:56 AM
From my conversations with them, i do not think we will see third rail, it will likely be catenary, and as far as I can tell, ALM fits within their definition of light rail.
August 1, 2025 at 11:22 PM
My other concern is going to be how difficult this will make things for anyone using pre-tax transit benefits.

The FRA regulation is a relic from the era that the H&M and Pennsy shared tracks.
