This is the book I would suggest to anyone wanting an « intellectual » understanding of the genre. It puts it into its historical, economical and social context explaining it’s origin and formation. There are other good books, but this does it a bit better imo.

#NP Sloche - Stadaconé (1976). Jazzier side of progressive rock from Québec. Mostly intrumental. Very good musicianship. For fans of Gentle Giant and some bands of the Canterbury scene like National Health, Hatfield And The North. RCA or reissued on cd and vinyl by ProgQuébec.
