Oh goody, another social media account to ignore.
So as I was going out for my afternoon constitutional, I got a glimpse of myself in the window glass. With the hat and the current facial hair configuration, I was getting a Robert Shaw in Jaws sort of vibe. I don't know. What do you think?

For the first time in a while, I'm planning to send out holiday cards, so if you'd like one, or if you've had a change of address, drop me a line in my PMs.

Do note that I have such a backlog of previous years' cards that you're getting reruns, though if you're new to this list, they're new to you!

Thanks to @ukiahtony.bsky.social , I decree that the day after Thanksgiving is herefore renamed "Bitch Fucker Day."

Alum Rock/Penitencia Creek greatest hits. View, creek, groundwater recharge ponds. Spotted a pair of Muscovy ducks, and idly wondered where they came from (someone's menagerie, most likely).

In spite of the pollution haze, the view of Mission Peak from Vargas Plateau was still stunning.

Your eyes do not deceive you. That is indeed a pond with ice on it. And it's after noon! The cold season has well and truly begun.

Madrone (Arbutus menziesii) in... fruit. Here in the Bay Area, we need to take fall color where we can get it, and I say this qualifies.

Cajun spiced flounder over rice, with a side of ratatouille and egg. I haven't made ratatouille in ages, mainly because throwing together a side salad is a lot less effort. Had to make a few substitutes: garlic powder for actual garlic, and parsley flakes for basil.

So I've been going back and watching old episodes of Mythbusters as of late, and it's always tinged with a bit of sadness. Not only because I used to watch this show with my dad, but also any time Grant Imahara is on screen. Like my dad, he was taken from us much too soon.

Hidden Lake Park. Spotted what I initially thought was some kind of egret, but I actually think it was a leucistic (i.e.: with entirely white plumage) black-crowned night heron. So if you're after a rare bird sighting, maybe pop down to Milpitas.

Antiquing in Niles. I was sorely tempted by Little Hans there, but ultimately resisted. Currently enjoying an ice cream cone.

The rest of the haul from today's thrifting/record store adventure:

Andreas Vollenweider: Caverna Magica (... Under the Tree — In the Cave...) Usually when I find his CDs in thrift stores, they look like a truck ran over them. This one looked OK.

I wasn't terribly interested in any of Jon Anderson's solo albums, but when you find the remastered copy of his most acclaimed one for thrift store prices, you don't pass up an opportunity like that.

The same Crescent Ridge/archery range hike I went on last time I was out here. There is a park like this closer to me—Las Trampas—but it kind of feels like a chore hiking out at Las Trampas even at the best of times. If you hit Briones just right, like today, hiking can be quite a joy.

Dr. Nicholas Senn, surgeon daddy. My personal preferred historical doctor daddy, actually, skipping ahead of several that are perhaps more obviously “my type” (e.g.: Walter Wyman, Jacob H. Gallinger, both previously featured) for *ahem!* personal reasons.

Belated photo blogging from Vargas Plateau. I don't know why I don't do the whole loop here more often. It's only a little over three miles round trip. I can do that in my sleep.

The Edwardian-era version of a boudoir photo? The pose, and those scandalously tight trousers, seem like they are not accidental. I like to imagine he had this photo taken to give to Edie as a sort of “marital aid” while he was off on long business or hunting trips.
