Some key Biology Education research findings from the latest SABER meeting

3 months is pretty late to post - sorry 😅 Attending is one of my favorite times of the year thanks to all of the teaching insights and learning opportunities as a professor!

GPA correlates with class performance, but it’s a great exercise in a Genetics class for demonstrating that the features that you inherit (Hereditary) do not always predict a strict outcome (Phenotype). Identifying over/underperformers is the first step to success 📈

Correlations among a combined cohort of 226 STEM students in a Genetics course. Some interesting prologues are among these data.

Obvious caveats include that correlations are typically preliminary and that plenty of data doesn’t scale perfectly (lots of students w/ 100% attendance)

Does higher student interest in a class improve outcomes in a 200-level STEM course? The basic data suggests so in this case. Let's take a look: yes, populations that arrive with high levels of interest (Likert 4,5) in the class perform significantly better than those that do not (N = 252).

Hello! You're correct that it associates with the other positive metrics, GPA included. The main GPA caveat is that 2nd years typically have less classes, which means GPAs can be a bit more jumpy towards extremes. We we did a Cox Regression, and Attendance and Hours emerged as sig. factors :)

Does attendance improve student outcomes in a 200-level STEM course? The data glaringly suggests so.

Welcome to Installment 1 of Student Data Sundays (sorry it's Monday) where I'll share helpful nuggets from the class data that our IRB collects.

Premed students balance grades, studying, class, and employment well, but my excellent student Emma highlights when you have to make tough choices. Listen to more of the student + prof podcast here: youtu.be/Kfl86GOoMF4?... or on Spotify/Apple #highered #college #stem #teaching #students

With #FAFSA under scrutiny, many suggest students find employment. Trust me, they already are, and working over 20+ hours a week is associated with <90% attendance, and both factors are associated with an inferior class prognosis. More to follow, including a successful intervention from Fall 2024 -
