I'm a semi-retired academic from the University of Birmingham now living amid the Cumbrian fells, as well as sometimes in my flat in Nice. Films, walking and trying to save the planet (pre)occupy me, and I still write a bit too!
As International Holocaust Day approaches, I highly recommend Jesse Eisenberg's movie 'A Real Pain' currently on release in the UK (and presumably elsewhere). It's ever so well written and Kieran Culkin's performance as Benji is remarkable - he both is and lives the 'real pain' of the title.

A great new Radio 4 series for anyone interested in the medical humanities and issues of reproductive justice etc. is 'The Body Politic', on at 11am on Mondays (and BBC Sounds subsequently, of course), at www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m.... Today's first episode on surrogacy was a real eye-opener.

Reports of the sad death of Birmingham-based novelist David Lodge have reminded me of starting work at UoB in 1990 (Lodge had already left to become a full-time writer, but was around on campus sometimes). Does the 'campus novel' still exist? I think the satire would have to be bleaker now!

A joy to be in calm sunny weather in Nice after nearly two months of the damp grey British winter!
