One of the first pieces I published was an oral history of Carter's Civil Service Reform Act based on archival work. Remember seeing a memo where Carter wrote something to the effect of "let the chips fall where they may" on a memo about potential wrongdoing in his administration.

To build on the point about legality, understand that there is no legal process for deporting a US citizen child with their family.
When a parent is deported, the family has to make the terrible decision about what to do next — leave or stay. That's wholly up to them. ICE doesn't decide.
