When Sturm was 18 a chance meeting with her older sister led to her reconnecting with her birth family. It was this first meeting with her father's whanau in late 1946 that compelled her to write 'Brown Optimism? The poem captures her shock at their poverty, her grief at the loss of Mãori language and culture, and her anger at the bleak future being offered to Māori children. Having grown up in the Pakeha world, she understood Pakeha attitudes to Mãori, knew how Pakeha systems entrenched Mãori disadvantage, and recognised that Mãori assimilation was considered by many Pakehā a desirable and inevitable outcome of colonisation. 'Brown Optimism's' righteous anger burns powerfully, coming as it does from the perspective of a young Mãori woman who has for her entire life been nurtured and trained to profit from assimilation, and demonstrate its advantages.
