Just four days of COP30 left

If past COPs are anything to go by, they should be starting to panic about now, as they realise that they have nothing to put in their final communique

In publishing, nothing is set in stone until a book is in the shops

So, the title - or at least subtitle - of my next book has been tweaked a little

It is now: THE FATE OF THE WORLD: A HISTORY AND FUTURE OF THE CLIMATE CRISIS

Out in Hbk/ebook next May

Later in pbk

Don't tar us all with the same brush!

30 years of COPs

30 years of rising emissions

And still overwhelmingly dominated by the burning of fossil fuels

Starmer well on course to reducing the share of his party's vote to zero

With a return to the Pliocene locked-in, the only meaningful question is, will we stop there or maintain BAU until a return to the Middle Miocene becomes inevitable or - ultimately - the early Eocene?

If the latter, this is what the UK will eventually look like

What a marvellous photo from @guardian 😀

It's made my day 👍

My predictions for COP30

1. Several days of promising that 1.5C is not dead

2. Huge panic when discovered there is nothing new to announce

3. Final communique - 2 days late - full of nebulous promises, and maybe a vague pledge to eventually transition away from fossil fuels

In case you hadn't yet twigged

These are the sorts of people the chancellor cuddles up to, and wants to keep happy

Working people struggling with rising living costs are just an inconvenient annoyance

"14.5 million people..... live in poverty and just under 3 million.... can’t afford to heat their homes

Billionaire wealth grew by £35m each day in 2024 and Britain’s 50 richest families now hold more wealth than half the population"

Guess who will bear the brunt of tax rises

A home-grown 13kg pumpkin ready for carving for Halloween

But first all the seeds and flesh need to be cut out, cubed and frozen, for later cakes and pies

Yum

Note, not a single one in the south. So much for 'levelling up'

A reminder of what a Cat 5 hurricane can do to even well-built concrete and steel structures

This was Acapulco (Mexico) in the aftermath of Cat 5 Hurricane Otis in 2023

Melissa is undergoing explosive intensification and is due to hit Jamaica as a Cat 5 hurricane the day after tomorrow

It has the potential to be absolutely devastating

Everyone has to seek severe hurricane-proof shelter

Stay safe!

Really serious hurricane set to hammer Jamaica and Cuba within the next few days

Currently a tropical storm, but building rapidly to a major Cat 4 storm

Stay safe everyone

This is the reality

We are going backwards - at least to the Pliocene - and, without an imminent colossal change in our behaviour, we will rewind the clock back 50 million years to the Eocene hothouse

Today's apple pick up here in the Peak

Lots, lots, more still on the trees

They will keep us in pies and crumbles over the winter 😊

When 2/3rds of your own party think you are doing a bad job, you know your time is up

Starmer has been a walking catastrophe for both Labour and the country

But an early Christmas present for Reform

Some marvellous sweetcorn this year - 1,000ft up in the Peak District 😃

Let's be absolutely clear what's up for grabs

We can no longer dodge climate catastrophe

A Pliocene climate (3C hotter, sea levels 20m higher) is now certain

We are now fighting to stop a return to the Middle Miocene: 7-8C hotter than PI, sea levels up to 50m higher
