Tight budgets and demographic collapse mean the number of teachers in the profession is likely to start falling from here. Lower churn makes it harder to find good career progression opportunities.

Today @teachertapp.bsky.social and School Dash publish an update to their teacher labour market report, showing showing job adverts down 27% on 18/19 and -36% on last year.

The pipeline to headship isn't strong.
Just 42% of deputy and assistant heads say they’d like to become a headteacher one day.
April 24, 2025 at 7:45 AM
Teacher commitment to the profession has stabilised at lower levels.
Only 60% of teachers expect to still be in the profession in 3 years’ time — down from 75% pre-pandemic. That figure has stabilised, but it’s still a warning light.
April 24, 2025 at 7:45 AM
Why are job ads down? Teachers are less inclined to search for new roles after very high post-COVID activity. Pupil numbers are falling in many schools. Budgets are squeezed so Headteachers are having to make cuts.
April 24, 2025 at 7:45 AM
Secondary school teacher job adverts are down 31% on last year.
They're also 22% lower than in 2018/19 – the last time Easter fell this late. Recruitment started normally in autumn but slumped from January onwards.

Can anyone point me to where I can find a recent estimate of the size of the implicit pupil premium, taking into account all funding streams? (like below...) @lukesibieta.bsky.social @mrjpandrews.bsky.social @theifs.bsky.social @edupolicyinst.bsky.social @fftedudatalab.bsky.social

Well it’s pleasant over here, isn’t it? Today I’m looking after my mum’s puppy whilst she goes kayaking (at the age of 77). Who can guess the breed and location?
