These two photos with a corpse flower blooming wild in the Sumatran jungle were taken about an hour apart. Can you spot the difference? In another couple of hours it would be fully open. In another day or two, dead and gone to seed.

More Ramadan Sufi sites in Sumatra. These are connected to Sh. Burhanuddin (17th C / Shattariya). Like customary law, Sufi orders are one of many religious mechanisms for environmental protection in this region.

Happy Ramadan! Here are some cool old mosques and shrines I visited in West Sumatra yesterday. This is the region that successfully held back Dutch colonial power for decades during the Padri War (ca. 1830s).
