Never really seen them here in Oz. I wanted to make a "rocket stove" style heater because they're really efficient, but apparently don't look as nice.

The self checkouts use a percentage tolerance when doing weight checks on the bagging scale. It could be plus or minus 100g for a 5L water bottle... but the new camera systems will get you.

It's not as complicated as people say. Things like aeration and the type of mix affect the speed of decomposition, but if you just dump your scraps in a large pile, it will eventually compost. Probably the easiest is to make a few large bins from corrugated galvanised iron.
