We are excited to share our next plenary speaker from @ehbea2025.bsky.social !

@prof-r-hill.bsky.social shows the STRANGE biases that exist in animal behaviour research via a nice and thorough overview of primate studies

Don’t miss it! 👀

Really enjoyed first #EHBEA2025 plenary

Hitting my soft-spots for reflective practice, observational wild primate research, & pics of vervet monkeys 🐒

Prof Russell Hill from @durhamanthropology.bsky.social considered how our presence can bias study subjects' behaviour 👀(🚨spoiler alert🚨 it does!)
#EHBEA2025 officially kicks off with our first plenary - Prof Russell Hill!

How strange are your animals?!? Bias is talked about in human research, but what about animals?? 🙈 🐦

👉 Opportunity, human exposure, habituation & observer effects create bias in animal research 👀

Great first plenary @ehbea2025.bsky.social by @prof-r-hill.bsky.social, who reflected on how the STRANGE framework, devised by @mikemwebster.bsky.social and Christian Rutz, relates to primate fieldwork (e.g. the impact of tolerance of human observers on social network datasets).

Different studies show that the presence of human observers is not neutral at all : in some cases, the monkeys are more calm and reassured when humans are present (especially in relation to the presence of predators). These biases need to be taken into account #ASABWinter2024

Talk 4 by Russell A.Hill discussed the impacts of habituation & tolerance of human observers during behavioural data collection. Many historical research with primates and with other animals (suricates, vulture guineafowl) used habituation. But what are the consequences ? #ASABwinter2024
