It’s because of Japanese law. If it’s labeled as “diet” it can’t be sold without a prescription. Used to be you could get Diet Coke, but you had to look for “Coke Light.”

This was also in the last system update for the main Switch, which was a PITA when I tried to play downloaded Smash Bros or my wife tried playing the Animal Crossing expansion before we figured this out.
