Sales taxes, too. It’s going to be really, really painful for people of the USA.
I’m going to put my rich guy hat on and say I hope that Mexico and Canada issue equal, retaliatory tariffs and stick to them for an extended period.

I apologize to all the people it will cost money and the businesses it will hurt.

But it’s the only way for tariffs to be seen for what they are

Part of me wonders if Trump has torpedoed the right wing in Canada with those tariffs or if he is going to promise the elimination of tariffs if Canada elects a similarly minded fascist.

Canada provides power to 30 US states. Some of them are very red. Imagine if there are retaliatory taxes on top of the tariffs on the electricity they provide. Guess who pays for that.

You can't make this up. Someone won an election because they counted on people, including the candidate, not knowing what things mean and how things work.

Hey. That 25% tariff also applies to Canadian oil, right? Pump prices should go up in the United States, then, for no other reason than one lunatic going apeshit.

Best of luck to you.

So many friends—a lot of them former colleagues in the human rights space—receiving the swift blow of stop work orders the past few days. Truly disheartening but/and also a deep reflection of how our lives in the Global South remain captive to arbitrary, subjugating forms of power.

Researchers Ryan McGrady, Ethan Zuckerman, and Kevin Zheng argue that if we want responsible policy about social media, it begins with making it possible for American researchers to answer fundamental questions about how social media is shaping our public discourse. https://buff.ly/4hglUdV.

UMass Amherst researchers argue that researcher access to social media data should be one of the rare things all political factions in the US can agree on.

The best gifts of the season aren't measured by their weight in gold, but by the space they take in your heart.

To see your person at an unexpected time, to have the weight of the world lift at the touch of their hands, to tell them they are loved, to see them smile - cherish these gifts.

After seeing him at the MVP Christmas Party, I understand.

Given that BlueSky has so few employees, I suggest that people do most of the work of closing right-wing grifters down themselves. Don’t name them or share them at all and block them individually. If the grifters are only talking to themselves, that will be enough to drive them off.

Delaware privacy law is important because it then covers most of American corporations. The question is, why does New York not have privacy coverage?
Worth noting that on 1 Jan 2025, new privacy legislation will come into force in five more states in the US: Delaware, Iowa, Nebraska, New Hampshire and New Jersey. Why is this important not just in the US but also Europe and the UK?…

Sometimes, I feel that the best writing I’ve ever done in my life is for someone who will never appreciate the density of what I’ve had to say, where every word had to die a thousand deaths before meeting my hand, even if what is said is a thousand permutations of, “I love you.”

The pain of a broken heart never really goes away. Our hearts build a wall around the space where our beloved used to be. Sometimes, the wall is so fortified to make it invisible. There, interred, lie the bones of our beloved, though they still live.

There is beauty in being deliriously mad over someone who is likewise deliriously mad over you. It is not a need; these days, it is a privilege. It is entirely possible to have a mature love filled with hope and rapturous bliss. I know it is.

It seems like such a crime to settle for less.
