For those of you new to the region, Fowler Beach in Prime Hook NWR has ideal nesting conditions for Piping Plovers (a threatened species) and American Oystercatchers (of special concern). Red Knots (near threatened) stop to feed here on their way to the arctic. The beach reopens on October 1.

Join Julie W. at 5pm in the refuge parking lot for a 1 mile roundtrip Sunset/Full Snow Moon Nature Walk on the Dike Trail. We'll be observing nocturnal wildlife. Sun sets at 5:35pm; full snow moon rises at 5:50pm. Rain/snow cancels the event. Photos from April 2024 Sunset/Full Pink Moon walk.

Head to Prime Hook NWR now and be greeted by increased activity and sound. Greater Yellowlegs fishing; Ring-necked Gull eating a crab; Red-winged Blackbird vocalizing (note the expanded throat); Tufted Titmouse in the early morning light.

SUNDAY 2/16 3:30pm WALK ABOUT AND DISCOVER PRIME HOOK NWR: Join April W. for a moderate walk of up to 2-1/2 miles and discover the trails in Prime Hook. There will be exit points for those participants who don’t wish to walk the whole distance. Meet at Refuge visitor center.
