At the Ostner-Schülke Lab at University of Göttingen and German Primate Center we focus on primate behavioral ecology & endocrinology and run the Phu Khieo Assamese Macaque Project in Thailand
Assamese macaque females prioritize future over current offspring! Check out our paper (led by PhD researcher Shivani) showing reduced infant survival if mothers conceive early again!

The event was the perfect way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Assamese Macaque Project, a collaboration between Thai & German institutions (currently Chulalongkorn Univ. Bangkok, @unigoettingen.bsky.social, @primatenzentrum.bsky.social) and a joint effort of researchers from 5 continents.

4 speakers provided overviews of available methods and their use in research & conservation, on validation & practical application as well as statistical analysis of the generated data. In a heroic effort, Suchinda Malaivitjitnond translated into Thai Julia’s & Oliver’s contributions on the spot.

Organized jointly with Prof. Suchinda Malaivijitnond, Chulalongkorn Univ., & Chief Wichanon Saenphala, DNP-T, 50 participants from Dept. of National Parks & 8 universities (6 Thai, 1 Lao, 1 German) spent 3 days in the forest of Phu Khieo WS discussing and practicing non-invasive methods.

Just finished our workshop on "Non-invasive methods for wildllife monitoring" at Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary! Supported by @primatecognition.bsky.social @primatenzentrum.bsky.social @sfb1528.bsky.social @unigoettingen.bsky.social & Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok!!

Elevated maternal glucocorticoid levels in 1st half of pregnancy were associated with increased HPA axis activity in the offspring of wild Assamese macaques. The same elevated maternal GCs had no effect in the 2nd half of pregnancy and tended towards an opposite effect when experienced after birth!

Timing matters for maternal effects on offspring HPA-axis in wild macaque. New paper out from the Assamese macaque Project at Phu Khieo Wildlife Sanctuary!
