syllables! for me I try (but rarely succeed) to follow four lines of 10 syllables then 2 lines of 12 syllables. Basically just copying the structure of any English poet before the 20th century.

Absolutely. Every time I begin writing a new poem the process is always different. Sometimes inspiration strikes and write like a fiend while other times I claw and scratch for every word. So even if I think I am a decent poet once I start a new one it always feels like the first time writing one.

John Keats has a lovely, clever and funny poem about cats called "To Ms. Reynolds Cat". You should check it out. Maybe it'll spark some inspiration for you own. Happy writing!
