After crossing the river between Portugal and Spain, the fog suddenly rolls in and we cannot even see the mountain behind use. But it clears quickly and a walk on the boardwalk takes us past some cheerily colored street art on the way to A Guarda.

Along the coastal path in Vila Praia de Âncora, a stencil on a wall says “Religion can’t overcome people’s will” and “Resistance is the way” Which is strategic placement along the camino where pilgrims would read the message. Pink and green figure seen further on. #streetart #camino #portugal

Just south of Vila Praia de Âncora, as we cut across railway tracks to find the waterfront, a tiny kitty smiles in a Palestinian flag. #streetart #camino #portugal

In Viana do Castelo, as I mosey to the waterfront to continue my camino north, an old man chivvys me in the right direction. There must be so many pilgrims who ask for directions. Mosaic figures in cheery colored tile adorn residential units. #streetart #camino #portugal

Igreja Matriz de São Miguel Arcanjo das Marinhas in Marinhas, Portugal. Very friendly padre stamps the camino passports of the small line of pilgrims and embosses the stamps. He gives me small bookmarks with prayers and a message from Pope Francis. #camino

Along the seaside in Vila do Conde, Portugal. A mural paying homage to women who worked in the fishing industry drying codfish.
“Este foi o mar das mulheres
Aqui se glorificaram
E aqui naufragaram”

Walking along the sand dunes near Vila Chã in Portugal while listening to the Dune audiobook. The area is not a desolate desert, but full of biodiversity.

“Tragédia no Mar” by José João Brito. A sculpture commemorating a shipwreck that claimed the lives of 152 fishermen. A freeze frame of despair. Along the shore at Matosinhos. #camino

I admired a painting at the Albertina in Vienna. “The High Shore” a 1923 landscape by Lyonel Feininger. Reminded me of a shot of Paul Atreides on Caladan in Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 movie Dune. The angularity of Feininger’s landscape paralleled by the geometric shapes of the aircraft in the movie.
